6/14/2008 Brenda Hanke, Ph.D. Cincinnati Museum of Natural History

"Geological History of the Cincinnati Region: 450 Million Years of Landscape Evolution"

Job Title: Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Cincinnati Museum Center

The Earth is constantly changing. Plates shift, oceans rise and fall, climate cools and warms, and biota evolves. Through these processes, the landscape and biodiversity of the Cincinnati region was shaped. In this workshop we will discuss the oceans, glaciers, and tropical climates once present in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, the evidence of these changes found in our rocks and fossils, and how these processes have shaped our landscape and continue to impact us. Come and explore 450 million years of landscape evolution!

Dr. Brenda Hanke came to Cincinnati Museum Center as Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology in 2004. Her research over the past 8 years has focused on our local rocks and fossils, specifically documenting evolution in trilobites from this region. Dr. Hanke is also Adjunct Professor at the University of Cincinnati and part-time faculty at Northern Kentucky University, teaching a geology course on natural disasters. Dr. Hanke earned a Bachelors of Science with Honors in Paleontology and a Masters in Earth Science from the University of Alberta in Canada. She then earned her Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Riverside, California.
