Marc Abrahams to Speak!

Fallen Thinker Cincinnati's Association for Rational Thought (ART) and the Mayerson Academy invite you to join us for a day of fun, frivolity and fresh AIR on:

Saturday, 14 March 1998
8:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Marc Abrahams, co-founder and editor of the Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), will present "Clear the AIR," workshop / seminar that, while aimed at teachers, is sure to entertain skeptics, students and parents alike.

Known to AIRheads as the "joke journal of science," AIR features reports of funny research - some genuine, some not - submitted by the world's most and least distinguished doctors, teachers, students and science writers. It boasts an editorial board of 40 distinguished scientists, including nine Nobel Laureates. (One of these distinguished scientists noted that even though this credential appeared on his curriculum vitae as his only editorial experience, it did not hinder his attaining tenure. This could be significant...!)

Marc and the gang at AIR are the originators of The First Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony, an event that will be celebrated for the eighth time in October, 1998. Held at Harvard University, the ceremony honors people whose achievments "cannot or should not be reproduced." Genuine Nobel Laureates bestow the Ig Nobel Prizes on all recipients who dare attend. Many of you will have enjoyed rebroadcasts of this event on National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation / Science Friday" on Thanksgiving weekends.

Marc is a sought-after as a speaker at science conventions and corporate events. A small organization like ART might not have been able to bring Marc to town for a one-night stand. However, when we learned Procter & Gamble had him scheduled for an internal program for researchers, this became worth looking into. When the Mayerson Academy agreed provide the venue and administrative support, the event became a reality.

Where...?

FYI - for those of you outside the immediate Cincinnati area, the Mayerson Academy is a beautiful, fantastically well-equipped facility, located near the University of Cincinnati. Opened in 1992, the Academy functions primarily as a professional development center for teachers in our tri-state region. However, when presented the opportunity to host a science program with appeal to both teachers and the community at large, the Academy offered its support with no hesitation.
